A credit card runs on a credit line. If someone makes an unauthorized purchase, they are not pulling cash directly from your checking account. Disputing a credit card charge gives you breathing room and keeps your actual travel funds safe and accessible.
Credit cards often make disputes less disruptive
No one wants to deal with card fraud while traveling. It's annoying at home. It can feel worse when you're standing in another country, trying to connect to hotel Wi-Fi and wondering what time it is back home.
With a credit card, a suspicious charge can usually be disputed before you pay your bill. With a debit card, the disputed money may already be out of your checking account while the issue is being reviewed. That doesn't mean debit card fraud cannot be fixed. It also doesn't mean credit cards are fraud-proof. They are not.
The point is simpler than that: when you're traveling, it's usually better for a fraud issue to affect your credit line than your available cash.
Debit Cards Still Have a Place
