W-8BEN Requirements

IRS Form W-8BEN is used to certify that you are not a U.S. taxpayer and to establish your foreign status for U.S. tax withholding and reporting purposes. By submitting a completed Form W-8BEN, you may be able to avoid U.S. tax withholding on dividend payments.

This form is required for all foreign members who hold an account with Campus Federal Credit Union. Each member listed on the account, including any authorized signers, must submit an individually completed, signed and dated Form W-8BEN.

It is the sole responsibility of the account holder(s) to ensure the form is completed accurately. For detailed instructions and additional information, please visit the IRS website at https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/iw8ben.pdf.

Additional Information

Validity of Form W-8BEN
Form W-8BEN is valid for 3 years as of the date of signature on the form. The form expires on December 31 of the third year. Campus Federal will send you a notification via email or mail requesting the completion and return of a new Form W-8BEN when the most recent form on file nears expiration.

Why it is Necessary to Update Form W-8BEN Every 3 Years
Completing a new Form W-8BEN every 3 years is necessary to prove that your condition as a non-taxpayer in the U.S. remains in effect and, thus, to avoid the withholding of taxes on dividend earnings.

Who Is Responsible for Updating & Submitting the Form
It is the sole responsibility of the account holder(s) to ensure a new, completed Form W-8BEN is submitted before the current one expires. If the form is not received in time, Campus Federal is required by IRS regulations to begin withholding taxes from your dividend earnings.

How to Submit the Form
Once completed and signed, Form W-8BEN must be submitted to Campus Federal.
